The referee
checks first.
The Table never takes a player’s word for it. Every move goes to the engine first; a rejected move comes back with the rule it breaks. Empty chairs are filled by ghost seats that play by the same rules.

LivePocket Tactics against a ghost seat
Try an illegal move.
It won’t let you.
Pick a card, then a lane. Try a card you can’t afford, a full lane or an Imp with nothing in range. The rejection cites the rule; the engine log on the right shows each event as it happens.
Your turn: pick a card, then a lane. End the turn to attack.

A ghost seat
never rolls dice.
A ghost seat is a pure function of the visible game state. It never touches the random number generator, so a replay with a ghost in it is exactly as reproducible as one without. The Lab uses the same ghost seats to playtest at scale. Around them, the Table brings people in: rooms by link, phones as private hands and a host screen for live nights.
